USTA season is upon us. Match play can be an exciting experience, but it can also put a lot of unnecessary stress. As someone who used to put a lot of pressure on oneself, it took away from the moment until the second set. Here are a few pointers you can use before/during a match that might aid you to having more fun/confidence/success.
Before a match, make sure you take care of any existing injuries. You want to make sure you are physically ready to go. Eat a good meal the day of the match with more carbs, some protein, and less fiber and fats. Fruits and granola bars are perfect. Positive reinforcement through visualization is important. It will build confidence and also put you in a better place mentally. Warm up with your team before the match so that your body is ready to go!
During warm up, keep an eye out on your opponent. You know your strengths and weaknesses, but you don’t know theirs. Maybe they have a weak backhand, keep a note on it. If you are playing doubles, make sure you tell your partner what you have observed.
During the match, play with your strengths, this is what brought you many victories! Be aware of the score; having big leads could take a lot of pressure off you, this is a potentially dangerous spot. Keep the pressure as if it were a close match, that way you will perform with more intention. Scores at 30-30 or deuce are important moments. Play the high percentage shots, then attack when given the chance. Try to be level-headed. Catastrophizing yourself is the last thing you want to do, and most likely the match is handed over. Take a deep breath and focus. And most important of all, have fun!
After the match, make sure you static stretch and have a beer, cheers!
