Developing slice, particularly the slice backhand, will add another repertoire to your tennis game, and can be used effectively as a defensive shot as well as an offensive weapon. I’ve noticed that slice is not used as regularly as it could be amongst both club and junior players. The benefits, however, of using slice are tremendous, so of which include:
Giving your opponent a different look/change in pace or rhythm
· The ball stays low so your opponent has to really get down, making it more difficult to attack
· Extra reach on the backhand side, and gives you more time to recover
· Easier to play low balls and is an effective approach shot
· The backspin on the slice backhand, particularly when hit at an opponent at the net, can often lead to errors due to mistiming
To hit a slice backhand, follow these guidelines:
· Use the continental grip.
· The swing for a slice backhand has to go from high to low. So, when taking the racquet back, ensure that it comes high above the shoulder. This is key because the racquet face has to be open when making contact with the ball.
· When making contact with the ball, the strings of your racquet should slide down the back of the ball. Think about trying to cut through the ball, so the bottom side of the racquet should lead the contact to the ball.
· Any motion from the arm should come from the shoulder. There shouldn’t be any body movement on the follow through, so you should stay sideways throughout the shot.
