Tennis Tip of the Month by MCTC Coach Ted Kim

A lesson, team practice, sets with
friends or a weekly match. Sometimes this is all we can
squeeze in during the week, as our lives are busy. We have
new concepts, strategies and ideas passed to us with the
goal of improving our game on the court. But how many times
do we have to repeat it before we become “unconsciously
competent”? The majority of us would answer more than once.
If you are looking to improve: be it footwork, shot making,
strength and endurance, or serving, you need to put in the
extra time! Time for repetition, to build muscle memory, so
that you can hit the shot you want when you want to, this
all takes extra practice time. This does not mean you have
to add more court time, although I think we’d all love to do
that. Rather, it means taking advantage of the time you
already have. We are lucky at MCTC, in that we have longer
court times that most other facilities. After your usual
warm up, take an extra 10 to 15 minutes to work on one shot,
or series of shots, that you want to improve or have
recently learned. Start any new drill at a slower than
normal pace, give yourself time to build confidence, groove
your swing. Think about your footwork and body positioning,
early prep will help you make those shots. Slowly build the
pace up to normal play tempo. That extra practice will help
you and your game. It will get you closer to becoming
“unconsciously competent”!
