2022 Wimbledon Predictions

Intro: The French Open has concluded, which signifies the start of grass court tennis. The third major of the year, Wimbledon, will be played at London’s All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and run between Monday, June 27 and Sunday, July 10. Grass courts typically have a lower bounce, and damp conditions can make the surface even faster. Because players have less time to prepare for the ball and requires players to move differently, aggressive tennis is usually rewarded. In May this year, Wimbledon decided to ban Russian and Belarusian players due to the conflict in Ukraine. In turn, the men’s and women’s tours responded by stripping the event of ranking points for this year.

Favorites for the Men’s Draw: Wimbledon has been dominated by Novak Djokovic in recent memory, having won the tournament in 2018, 2019, and 2021 (it was not played in 2020 due to the COVID-19 global pandemic). His aggressive baseline playing style is tailormade for grass, and he has developed his flat serve into a weapon. Recently, Rafael Nadal won his 22nd grand slam at Roland Garros, his second major of the year. However, the grass in London has not been as kind of Nadal as the Paris clay. His last title at Wimbledon came in 2010, but he has made the semifinals in 2018 and 2019. Italy’s Matteo Berrettini was the runner-up last year, and made the semifinals of the 2022 Australian Open. However, he later sustained an injury to his right hand that necessitated surgery, but should be back for the grass court season.

My pick: Djokovic has not lost at Wimbledon since 2017, and is the clear favorite to lift his seventh crown. His fitness, agility, and mobility are second to none.

Favorites of the Women’s Draw: Having won the 2022 French Open, Iga Swiatek has extended her win streak to 35 matches in a row, the longest since 2000. The 21-year old Pole has been dominant, dropping only two sets in the last 27 matches. She made the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2021, and her aggressive, all-court playing style is well suited for grass. Emma Raducanu, most well-known for her triumph at the 2021 U.S. Open, also made the fourth round at Wimbledon last year. As a native Brit, she will have the crowd on her side. Coco Gauff, the 2022 French Open finalist, has made the fourth round at Wimbledon in her first two appearance (2019 and 2021). She is the former No. 1 junior in the world, and is currently ranked No. 13 in the WTA Tour.

My pick: This might be a pick out of left field, but I’m going with Garbine Muguruza. She won Wimbledon in 2017, so knows what it takes to have success on grass. She has an aggressive all-court playing style, and is due to return to form. Most recently, she also won the year-end 2021 WTA Finals, and is currently ranked No. 10 in the world.
