URGENT ! CALL TO ACTION ! TO ALL SEATTLE AREA TENNIS PLAYERS !

In place of the Monthly Tennis Tip, this vital issue had been brought to our attention. If you play Tennis on the Outdoor Public Park Courts in Seattle you must make your voices heard. The Seattle Parks & Rec are currently making policy decisions regarding Pickleball and Tennis Courts. They need Tennis Players input ASAP. The same mentality that locked the gates and took down the nets of the tennis courts during the Covid Pandemic, the same mentality that did a $1,000,000 survey to move Evans Pool/Community Center to Lower Woodland Courts, the same mentality that took away Tennis courts for Dodge ballers is now looking at Pickleball vs Tennis. I have nothing against Pickleball ( we sell equipment) but I am against taking away Tennis courts to serve their demands. Since Covid-19, the demand for Tennis has skyrocketed. It’s a socially distant and a low risk sports activity. We need SPR to increase more Tennis Courts and Facilities and to upgrade the existing courts. ( Ever play Tennis on the Eastside ? What is the surface like on the Park Court you are currently using ? Does it have a Center Net Strap ? Do the nets have holes ? Are there cracks and weeds growing on the courts ?) To the best of my knowledge the Amy Yee Tennis Center and Tennis Center at Sand Point produces hundreds of thousands of dollars much of which goes to the “General Fund.” I also understand that the Public Court Reservation system is making thousands of dollars. Why can’t this revenue benefit Tennis in Seattle ? Please read on below and respond to the SPR survey before the Feb 8th Deadline.

Urgent Call to Action: To all Seattle Area Tennis Players
Tennis / Pickleball Survey “Make your Tennis Voices Heard”

Hello,
I think most know that pickleball is a growing sport and it has been in the news quite often these days. Please take 10 mins to complete a survey that was created and placed on social media by Seattle Parks. I believe the results of this survey is intended to give Seattle Parks direction and/or ideas on how to allocate resources, i.e. converting existing tennis courts to pickleball. While I think the perfect solution would be to build a new pickleball only facility, it’s not a near term solution and it may be years away. Some tennis courts in the city are already dual striped for both sports. Dual striping is a way to share our existing tennis courts. BUT there is discussion on converting existing tennis courts to PB only. Therefore, as tennis enthusiasts whether you play or a family & friends that play, please complete this survey so our tennis community is heard (and just not by PB players). Worse case would be the tennis courts in your neighborhood where you play tennis might be considered for PB only.
Please forward this survey to your friends too.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/SeattlePickleball

Save public tennis courts in Seattle:

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) is doing a survey to guide their decisions in planning for the future of pickleball and tennis in Seattle. The survey is only open through February 8th, and feedback from the local tennis community is critical to save tennis courts in Seattle. Anyone who uses Seattle public tennis courts will be affected by the results of this survey:

  1. SPR is thinking of converting some tennis courts to pickleball courts and dual striping others.  It’s important to fill out the survey so that SPR hears about the impact this would have on tennis players.  If tennis players don’t respond to the survey, SPR may think that we don’t care about courts being converted or shared.
  2. You do not need to answer every question in order to have your voice heard.  It’s okay to leave some blank.
  3. Three questions are particularly important:
    1. Please do not overlook the question about the quality and quantity of tennis courts in Seattle.  Are you satisfied with the state of public tennis courts in the city?
    2. Please do not overlook the question about the effect of increased pickleball play on tennis court availability.  Does more pickleball make it more difficult to find available tennis courts?
    3. Please do not overlook the chance to write into the final box that requests other comments.

I personally enjoy playing PB too, but this survey is more about hearing from the tennis community.
