Intro: The first grand slam of 2022, the Australian Open, is slated for January 17-30, 2022 at Melbourne Park. Last year’s event saw a couple familiar faces raise the trophy: Naomi Osaka won her 2nd title, while Novak Djokovic won his record 9th title. For 2022, prize money is increased to $4.4 million each for the winners of the men’s and women’s singles draws.
Women’s Draw
Favorite: Ash Barty is the No. 1 female player in the world, and is playing on her home turf. Her slice backhand is a thing of beauty, and she will have the crowds behind her. But, no local player has won the Australian Open singles title in 44 years, so history is not on her side.
My Pick: As Coach Rudy Tomjanovich of the Houston Rockets said, “Don’t underestimate the heart of a champion.” For all the criticism she has endured this year, Naomi Osaka is still the reigning champion down under. She has won a total of four Grand Slams, and has taken much deserved time away from the sport to focus on her wellbeing – something we should all aspire to do for ourselves. She is hungry to get back atop the sport she loves.
Wild Card: Simona Halep has fallen to No. 20 in the WTA rankings, but she made the finals of the Australian Open in 2018; the semifinals in 2020, and the quarterfinals in 2014, 2015, and 2021. She is an aggressive baseliner, and her defensive skills and court coverage are second to none. Watch out for Halep to make noise at the first Grand Slam of the year.
Men’s Draw
Favorite: Assuming he will play, Novak Djokovic has to be the hands down favorite to win the title for a record 10th time. He is arguably the fastest and fittest player on the tour, and has no weaknesses. If anything, the only person who can beat Djokovic is Djokovic. After implosions at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and U.S. Open finals, he is motivated to move ahead of the Big Three and win a record 21st Grand Slam title.
My Pick: As unaesthetic as they are, Daniil Medvedev’s unorthodox groundstrokes have produced tremendous results, taking him to No. 2 in the world and the 2021 U.S. Open title. Medvedev is a wall, and just does not miss on either side. It is difficult to hit through him, his defense is world class, and he is speedy for a lanky fellow. He might just make it back-to-back Grand Slams.
Wild Card: 2021 was a breakout year for Casper Ruud, who is my personal favorite current player on the tour. He won a tour-leading five titles, went 27-10 on hardcourts, and currently sits at No. 8 in the world. His best grand slam result was at the Australian Open in 2021, where he reached the 4th Round. Is 2022 the year for the Norwegian to claim his maiden slam? It might very well be so.
