In what’s becoming a historically abnormal year for the professional tennis tour, the French Open is just now underway. Due to the cooler temperatures and moisture in the air, the clay is causing the ball to bounce much slower than previous years. This has caused matchup issues for certain play styles and the players unwilling to adapt to the new conditions are losing. The same can be said for tennis at the club level. Though court speeds won’t differ as much as from clay to hard courts, even across hard courts the speed differs significantly, especially going from indoor to outdoor. Indoor courts which are typically less grainy are much quicker and low bouncing than a grainy outdoor hardcourt meant to withstand the elements. This means that if you play a flat baseline game based on power, you’ll lose an edge outdoors and should look to increase your consistency and be aggressive moving to the net and stealing time. And if you’re more of a counter puncher, outdoors should be well suited, but indoors it’s especially important to stand as close to the baseline as possible so you don’t give up space and allow the opponent to come in. You should also make hitting deep your primary goal. If you are able to adapt to your court conditions, you will gain a competitive edge that can help in tight situations.
