As the overcast and dreary skies have parted, Washingtonians enjoy the ‘rain’ of sunshine. The three months of July-Sept tend to be some of the best in Washington and no better place to live! The only problem is what should you do when the sun is out and the thermostat starts with an 8 or a 9…?
There are a number of precautions you can take:-The night before throw a bottle or two of water in the freezer. These will thaw nicely on a hot day as you play.-Also the night before don’t drink caffeine or alcohol, especially if your style of game involves a lot of running.-Pre-hydrate (at least 16 oz) a little while before you start playing and then keep drinking lots of water all day. Quick sips after games.-Water and electrolytes (Sports drinks) are best for hydration.-Wear Sunscreen (for a long match, reapply)-Make sure to play in light, breathable gear. Put on the lightest colors you own. No black or dark blues on hot days. Include a light cap as well. -Make sure to have a banana or some nuts around to avoid cramping.
-If you are not used to excessive heat and/or it also happens to be very humid, consider playing another day or only playing a set.
What else can I do?-Look for courts with more tree coverage (more shade).-Play early in the day or at night.-Consider shortening points, by attacking the net.-Take longer than ‘approved’ breaks between change overs. Make sure to do these in the shade, no matter where it is on the court.
REMEMBER: An outdoor court can be 15-20 degrees warmer than the air temperature, especially by mid-day!
Ok now that I figured out how to prepare for the heat, how do I win? Couple of quick tips that can help:-Start off slow and get a feel for the heat and the sun.-Adjust your toss so that you are not tossing into the sun. Toss right or left of it. It won’t have a huge negative effect, but also take a little off the serve. Sometimes moving where you serve from can also help. -Virtually all overheads let bounce. It allows you to not stare into the sun. Back up to baseline and start looking for the bounce.-When possible have your opponent start the match by serving into the sun. -Every chance you get, step into the shade to stay cooler. -Take some pace of your shots to make them more accurate and thus make your opponent run more.
Stay safe, stay hydrated, stay smart!
