As summer weather is back, it’s time to get prepared for outdoor tennis. I’m sure many of you have had to play outdoors in some capacity giving the extraordinary circumstances as of late, but I’m willing to bet that many of you are finding outdoor tennis much more challenging than indoor tennis. Indoors, we are protected from the elements, and with no wind resistance and controlled climates, the ball is more predictable to hit. There are a few main factors that make playing outdoors significantly more challenging than playing indoors, and if you can master how to use them to your advantage, your game will be more competitive. Many club players think that the sun is the biggest factor when moving from indoors to outdoors, but in reality, it’s the wind, and the climate in general. It’s important to know that when the weather is cooler outside, the ball will travel slower since colder air is heavier and will lead to more spin on your ball naturally. In warmer weather, the air is thinner and lighter so the ball flies more and is faster. This means that as you consider playing outdoors more, it may be smart to have your rackets strung at slightly different tensions. For the afternoons, when it’s really warm, I string at 54 pounds to get a bit more control, and for the evenings, when it’s cooler, I string at 50 pounds. This may not apply to you if you aren’t someone that tends to hit the ball very deep in the first place, but if your margins are slim, small tension differences can be the difference between in and out on an important point. Next, you have to consider that there is more wind resistance outdoors, meaning it is harder to swing fast, which you will likely notice most when serving. This combined with wind means that outdoors, it is important to add more spin to the ball than you might be used to indoors, or look to get strings that are naturally geared towards spin or control rather than power. Playing in wind also means the ball may bounce unpredictably, so really focus on going to the ball and not letting the ball come to you; be extra proactive with your footwork outdoors. Don’t be mistaken, the sun is also an important factor, but there are more straightforward workarounds. If the sun is in your eyes when serving, try tossing the ball in a different location and take something off of your serve so you don’t fall into a pattern of double faults on the “sunny side” of the court. Anything you deal with, your opponent will deal with as well, so if overheads are difficult in the sun for you, they are for them, too. So, a good tactic can be to draw your opponent in when they are playing on the side with the sun facing them, and then lob them on their non-dominant shoulder, making it doubly difficult to handle. Hopefully, these tips can help you have more fun outdoor hitting and win more matches along the way.
